MA Psychology (Counseling)
Lewis University Illinois
I was very keen in pursuing psychology even from a young age. But, there was no psychology program in Malaysia when I left high school.
I was from a family that didn't have the financial means to send me overseas to study.
So, I completed my first degree in Genetics where I focused on Human Cancer, graduated with a First-Class...and started working. As I did so, I wrote to universities in the US - applying for a place and for funding. I almost gave up at the 44th universities that didn't have enough funding. By God's grace, it was the 45th university that welcomed me - with a place and with a full graduate assistantship.
I entered the MA with the 1st sem being a bridge doing undergraduate pre-requisities.
I worked a day job and a night job that paid for my tuition and room and board; and attended evening classes.
With the love of the discipline, the blessings of God, and the amazing professors and peers I had, I completed my MA with a GPA of 4.0.
I will forever be grateful to the community and friends at (and thru) Lewis University for my success.
I found my work at the Child & Adolescent Unit at Joliet Medical Center (group & individual therapy) and my work with International Students (in providing pastoral support, and starting the Host Family Program) enriching - giving me deep and broad experiences in my passion to make sustained change in diverse people's lives. In addition, I got to pursue my additional interests in Animal-Assisted Therapy and Parent Education Programs.
