Methods used

Samples of oral tissue from patients with oral mucosal lesions and throat washings from healthy individuals were screened for HHV-6 DNA using nested PCR. The appropriate amplified fragments were confirmed by non-radioactive hybridization with a HHV-6 specific oligonucleotide probe. 

DNA was extracted from: 
  • fresh oral biopsies from 9 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
  • paraffin-embedded tissues of 5 patients (2 with Lichen Planus and 3 with Leukoplakia)
  • throat washings of 22 healthy individuals​
