You Can Make A Difference

"With no psychology program in Malaysia back then, I went into Genetics - one of the toughest disciplines at the Top university in the country. I graduated with a First-Class Honors.
With no money, I wrote to 45 universities, and Lewis in Illinois offered me a graduate assistantship that covered everything for my Masters in Counseling Psychology. I graduated with a GPA of 4.0.
Even when no one believed in the effort, I was adamant  in started the first psychology program.....so as to help improve psychological wellbeing of Malaysia.
Today, I'm proud of dreaming the impossibles.
And, I'm proud of our successful graduates found across Malaysia and the Globe.
Don't stop Dreaming. You CAN Make A Difference ! "

Dr B's Teaching Statement
Igniting Learners for Global Impact: Practitioner-Scientific Skills

Teaching is my profound opportunity to nurture and inspire future agents of change, wherein I bring the world into my classroom, and my classroom into the world. My approach stems from my academic foundation in the field as well as extensive experience in industry, where I have applied psychological principles in real-world scenarios. I am driven in bringing out the best in every student, fostering an environment of engagement, curiosity, and growth, regardless of background, culture and beliefs.

Pedagogical Philosophy
At the heart of my teaching philosophy is knowing that every student matters. And, that every student has the potential to be a change agent. Psychology provides a unique lens through which students can understand themselves and the world around them. I aim to equip my students with not only the technical knowledge of psychology but also the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to apply that knowledge effectively. I view the classroom as a collaborative space where teachers and learners learn from one another. This interactive approach empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey and discover their potential.

Teaching Methods and Engagement
An inclusive learning environment is key to how I facilitate learning – where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. Regardless of whether I am teaching a large lecture or a small seminar, I prioritize student engagement through active participation. I use a combination of visual lectures, interactive group discussions, real-world case studies, dynamic hands-on projects, and online learning platforms to cater to diverse learning styles. My industry experience allows me to integrate real-world examples into my teaching, demonstrating the practical implications of psychological theories. By relating course content to contemporary issues and practical applications, I inspire students to see the relevance of their learning beyond the classroom.

I am particularly drawn to experiential learning, as I believe it deepens students’ understanding and fosters critical skills. For example, in teaching topics like organizational behavior or developmental psychology, I incorporate simulations, role-playing, and scenario analysis. These methods allow my graduate students to practice problem-solving in real-time, develop insights into the psychological principles that shape human behaviour, and think about what can be done to help. In turn, they leave my classroom better prepared to make meaningful contributions in both academic and professional contexts.

Fostering Research and Critical Inquiry
I am committed to fostering research skills and critical inquiry among students. I have supervised undergraduate and graduate student projects, helping them develop strong applied research capabilities, from formulating hypotheses to data analysis and interpretation. These projects have allowed students to gain hands-on experience in psychological inquiry. My goal is to mentor students in developing a mindset of curiosity and evidence-based reasoning, which they can apply in various contexts throughout their careers. Although I have not yet supervised doctoral-level theses, my experience supervising student projects (as well as supervising research interns) has prepared me to mentor graduate students in more advanced research endeavours. I am eager to contribute to a research-rich academic environment where I can support students in exploring new frontiers in psychology, whether through original research, applied projects, or interdisciplinary collaborations.

Real-World Industry-Academia Synergy
One of my greatest strengths is my ability to draw from both academic and industry experiences. Having worked in diverse sectors, I understand how psychological principles are applied to solve real-world problems. Whether it is working on employee wellbeing and safety in an organization or designing positive youth development interventions in schools, my applied experience gives me a wealth of examples and case studies that enrich my teaching. By connecting academic theories with industry applications, I provide students with a holistic understanding of human behavior and prepare them for various career paths. This approach is particularly effective in guiding students interested in applying psychology beyond academia, whether in business, oil and gas, aviation, healthcare, schools, or social services.

Commitment to Student Success
I am deeply invested in the success of my students. I believe that teaching goes beyond merely delivering content; it involves mentoring, supporting, and challenging students to grow as individuals and professionals. I am dedicated to providing individualized attention to students, whether they need academic support, career advice, or guidance in personal development. I have always aimed to be a role model and a mentor, guiding my students not only to academic success but also to become ethical, empathetic, and effective change agents.
I have been blessed to constantly receive high positive feedback from students.

Conclusion
In summary, I view teaching as a dynamic and reciprocal process where collaborative learning takes place. My goal as an educator is to equip and facilitate students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to effect positive change in the world. With a strong foundation in both academia and industry, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to an academic institution that values innovative teaching, interdisciplinary research, and the development of future leaders in psychology. I look forward to the privilege of shaping the next generation of change agents in the field of psychology.
